What is Neck Pain?

Neck pain refers to various degrees of pain and discomfort in the neck and shoulder region that may range from mere discomfort to aching or a feeling of an electric shock in the neck region affecting movement. Abnormal sensations are called paresthesia, and may also be felt as tingling, numbness, burning from the neck, potentially down to the fingers. The neck is comprised of vertebrae, which connect the torso's upper back and the skull, with ligaments, muscles, and tendons. All these components work together to support the head, allowing for blood transfer and communication between the brain and the rest of the body. There are cervical disks between the vertebrae that help absorb shock, and joints in the back of the neck called facet joints, both allowing motion in the neck region.

Causes of Neck Pain

Neck pain is a common occurrence, and everyone is liable to experience it at some point in life. Simple issues such as poor sitting, sitting too much, sleeping posture, or more involved injuries from sports, motor vehicle accidents, slip and fall injuries, work, or overuse of the neck can result in neck pain.

Other specific causes of neck pain, such as inflammation that affects the nerves of the neck or degeneration of the vertebral tissues can result in prolonged neck pain and discomfort, or paresthesia. If you experience prolonged neck pain that doesn't subside in a week or so, it is advisable to visit our chiropractor for an assessment. Some causes of neck pain include:

  • Injury
  • Muscle strain or tension
  • Anterior Head Carriage, AKA Forward Head Posture
  • Emotional stress, which can lead to muscle strain
  • Spondylosis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Arthrits, or Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD)
  • Herniated cervical disks, or Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Spinal tumors

Neck Pain Care

When you first visit our office, our chiropractor will evaluate your musculoskeletal system to identify the root cause of your neck pain. Additional testing such as an x-ray may also be conducted to give our chiropractor a more clear understanding of the disorder in your musculoskeletal system. Once the source of your neck pain has been determined, we will create a chiropractic care plan to address it.

Chiropractic care is an appealing option for neck pain treatment because it is natural and non-invasive. Rather than masking your pain with prescription medication or resorting to invasive surgery, chiropractic care will relieve your neck pain at its source. Chiropractic adjustments performed will vary between manual adjustments and the use of Activator Methods. Dr. Rehl has attained Advanced Proficiency in Activator Methods, the highest level, for this safe, effective, and gentle method of adjusting your full body.
